Ground cover presence in organic olive orchards affects the interaction of natural enemies against Prays oleae, promoting an effective egg predation

چکیده

The olive moth, Prays oleae, is one of the most common insects that damages olives in Mediterranean region. establishment ground cover within orchards has been promoted this region recent years to avoid erosion and soil degradation. Nevertheless, its role as a shelter for natural enemies pests controversial. In study, we have investigated effectiveness biological control P. oleae organic with (mowed) without (tilled). For this, (1) assessed relationship between predated eggs abundance both types orchards; (2) compared potential damage pest egg hatching two (3) examined interaction amongst families (as adults eggs). results showed there high rate predation studied orchards, 81% were predated, 12.2% hatched, 6.9% live eggs. However, mowed more effective controlling by means rather than tilled i.e., whilst was higher, low. structure adult arthropod community, composition did not differ but Anthocoridae, Miridae Scelionidae significantly higher orchards. Finally, better explained effects on Aeolothripidae, Miridae, Chrysopidae (predators), Formicidae (omnivore). We discuss terms ecological interactions trophic guilds conclude maintenance at least June July, great significance because it positively affects oleae. This effect especially significant when low

Ethylene can reduce Prays oleae attack in olive trees

An ethrel treatment of olive trees in two sites differing in altitude caused a decline in the infestation of Prays oleae, an important pest in this crop. Since the ethylene treatment did not affect natural enemies of P. oleae, we conclude that this natural compound can be used as an alternative to the use of pesticides in olive orchards. The results of this work indicate that ethrel affects P. ...

Is Ground Cover Vegetation an Effective Biological Control Enhancement Strategy against Olive Pests?

Ground cover vegetation is often added or allowed to generate to promote conservation biological control, especially in perennial crops. Nevertheless, there is inconsistent evidence of its effectiveness, with studies reporting positive, nil or negative effects on pest control. This might arise from differences between studies at the local scale (e.g. orchard management and land use history), th...

Response of olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae to various attractant combinations, in orchards of Crete

McPhail traps loaded with various attractant solutions (ammonium sulphate, Entomela 75%, Entomela 50%, Dacus bait 100, sexual pheromone of olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae) combined also with registered plant protection products (lambda-cyhalothrin, alpha-cypermethrin as well as dimethoate) were tested for their attractiveness which was indicated as captures of flies in McPhail traps during thr...

Effect of non-crop vegetation types on conservation biological control of pests in olive groves

Conservation biological control (CBC) is an environmentally sound potential alternative to the use of chemical insecticides. It involves modifications of the environment to promote natural enemy activity on pests. Despite many CBC studies increasing abundance of natural enemies, there are far fewer demonstrations of reduced pest density and very little work has been conducted in olive crops. In...

Testing the Enemies Hypothesis in Peach Orchards in Two Different Geographic Areas in Eastern China: The Role of Ground Cover Vegetation

Many studies have supported the enemies hypothesis, which suggests that natural enemies are more efficient at controlling arthropod pests in polyculture than in monoculture agro-ecosystems. However, we do not yet have evidence as to whether this hypothesis holds true in peach orchards over several geographic locations. In the two different geographic areas in eastern China (Xinchang a town in t...
